OTTAWA, October 10, 2012  – The 23rd Annual One World Film Festival line up will touch on high profile current issues, including the European debt crisis and the ongoing change in the Arab world. The selected films present first-hand experiences of these historic events, in keeping with the 2012 festival theme of “Uncommon Journeys.”

On Friday, October 12 (6:30 p.m. at Library and Archives Canada), the festival will screen “Krisis.” The audience will see a sobering, ground-level account of the impact of the debt crisis being experienced in Greece. The film presents accessible theories on the root cause of the debt, and a clear-eyed, in-depth understanding of its impact on the daily lives of Greek citizens. It also hints at what the potential long-term impacts of current austerity measures might be.

On Saturday October 13 (again, 6:30 p.m. at Library and Archives Canada), audiences will be treated to the Canadian premiere of the film “Words of Witness,” and a unique perspective on the Arab Spring. We follow the events and fall-out of the Egyptian Revolution through the eyes of a young, female journalist. It is a powerful coming of age story of both a young woman and a young revolution.

The One World Film Festival will open its programme on October 11th with a highly unique presentation of the history of Haiti, a country still recovering from the recent devastation of the 2010 earthquake. In “When the Drum is Beating,” the story of the nation is rhythmically told through the music and personal stories of members of its national orchestra, called Septentrional.  (Film at 8:30PM at LAC).
